SPINOSAURUS

Spine/Spined/Spiny lizard/reptile

Spinosaurus (meaning "spined lizard") is an extinct genus of spinosaurid theropod dinosaur that existed in what is now North Africa during the Cretaceous period. Spinosaurus is argued to be the longest of all known carnivorous dinosaurs, even longer than Carcharodontosaurus, Giganotosaurus, and Tyrannosaurus rex. It is also the largest species of spinosaurid, with the largest specimen, MSMN V4047 reaching 14 meters (46 feet) in length, although classification of MSMN V4047 remains highly debated in the scientific community. Its smaller relatives include Suchomimus, Baryonyx, Irritator, Ichthyovenator, and a newly discovered species called Iberospinus. Estimates of the animal's size have ranged from 59 feet (18 meters) and 9.9 tons (19,800 pounds) in 2005 by Del Sasso et al. to a 2022 estimate of 46 feet (14 meters) and 8.2 tons (16,400 pounds) by Paul Sereno et al.
